The City of Three Waters

Nestled in the Chao Phraya Delta, Bangkok is famously known as the City of 3 Waters, influenced by the waters from the north, the rainwater, and the tidal flows from the Gulf of Thailand. With a rich history of coexisting with water dating back to the Ayutthaya period, water has been central to life in Bangkok, serving as a source of food, agriculture, and transportation.

However, rapid economic and industrial development has altered this relationship. Urbanization has encroached on agricultural lands, cars have replaced boats, and many canals have been converted into streets or left neglected, leading to a significant decline in their ecological services. This shift has brought about challenges such as repetitive flooding in Bangkok and other provinces in the Lower Chao Phraya Basin, along with severe droughts affecting agriculture. Climate change exacerbates these issues, and current solutions are often fragmented across different agencies.

Water as Leverage Bangkok – Reconnecting with Water aims to create an integrated platform and foster discussions that lead to effective and holistic solutions. The initiative brings together local, national, and international stakeholders to collaborate on sustainable and resilient strategies for water management and climate adaptation. By embracing the Water as Leverage methodology, the program seeks to restore the harmonious relationship between Bangkok's residents and their waterways, ensuring a resilient future for the city.
