The Pond City

Khulna, the third-largest city in Bangladesh, boasts a unique blend of urban and village-like atmospheres due to its extensive greenery and pond systems. These ponds are more than just water retention systems; they serve as central public spaces where neighborhoods gather and communities thrive. Despite the pressures of urban development, the ponds remain a signature element of Khulna's urban structure, contributing to its vibrant character.

However, Khulna faces significant challenges, including salinization, floods, and a declining water supply. Nearly 50% of the canals and rivers that shaped the city's drainage system have disappeared, leading to frequent floods and waterlogging. Water as Leverage Khulna aims to tackle these issues through innovative solutions that integrate the city’s historical water systems with modern infrastructure. By leveraging the Water as Leverage methodology, the program seeks to build a resilient and sustainable future for Khulna, ensuring water management and economic growth go hand in hand. Let’s transform Khulna into a sponge city, securing a vibrant and thriving community for the future!
